China (Hunan) – Kenya Edible Fungi Technology Training
A five-day applied training course bringing China's leading edible fungi cultivation science directly into Kenya's growing mushroom sector. Delivered by the Hunan Provincial Edible Fungi Research Institute, through KNCCI's Chamber Business Academy.
Delivered by CBA · In partnership with Hunan Provincial Edible Fungi Research Institute
About This Programme
Kenya's edible fungi sector is at an early but fast-moving stage of growth. Domestic demand is rising, regional export markets are undersupplied, and the conditions for large-scale production exist across multiple counties. The technical gap like: cultivation science, post-harvest handling, grading, and export readiness, has kept most Kenyan producers below the quality threshold that commercial buyers require.
This training closes that gap. Five days. Eight subject areas. Instruction from practitioners at China's Hunan Provincial Edible Fungi Research Institute, which has developed cultivation systems for diverse growing environments across three continents. Participants leave with applied technique, market knowledge, and a joint certificate from CBA and the Hunan Institute.
Why Edible Fungi. Why Now.
Global demand for edible fungi is growing at over 9% per year. East African markets are significantly undersupplied. Kenyan producers who meet buyer quality and consistency standards have a direct export route through AfCFTA and regional trade channels.
Most Kenyan growers operate below the quality and volume threshold that institutional and export buyers require. The gap is not land or labour. It is cultivation technique, post-harvest science, and commercial know-how.
China produces over 70% of the world's edible fungi. The Hunan Provincial Edible Fungi Research Institute has refined cultivation methods for warm, variable-climate environments. This training brings that expertise directly to Kenyan producers.
What You Will Learn
8 modules across the programme.
Industry Overview
Current status and development prospects of the edible fungi industry — Kenya's position in a global market growing at over 9% per year.
Oyster Mushroom Cultivation
Full cycle: substrate preparation, inoculation, fruiting conditions, harvest technique, and yield consistency — hands-on, not theoretical.
White Mushroom Cultivation
Composting, casing, temperature and humidity management, and optimisation for Agaricus bisporus in Kenyan growing conditions.
Fungi Physiology and Ecology
The biological science behind production success: fungal life cycles, mycelium behaviour, fruiting triggers, and environmental stress responses.
Nutritional and Environmental Requirements
Substrate formulation, humidity, temperature, CO₂, and light requirements by species — the science of getting conditions right every time.
Grading, Preservation, and Packaging
Post-harvest quality grading, cold-chain handling, fresh and dried product packaging specifications — what buyers actually inspect.
Export and Market Trade
Kenyan and East African export channels, documentation, phytosanitary requirements, pricing structures, and how to engage commercial buyers.
Simplified Cultivation and Pest Control
Low-input cultivation methods for smallholder settings, plus systematic contamination prevention, pest identification, and disease management.
Built For
Growers and Farm Operators
Upgrade your cultivation technique, improve yield consistency, and meet the quality standard commercial buyers require.
Agricultural Business Owners
Understand the full edible fungi value chain before committing capital to infrastructure or stock.
Traders and Exporters
Learn grading, preservation, packaging, and export documentation — everything between harvest and the buyer's receiving dock.
Aspiring Producers
Get a solid technical and commercial foundation before you invest. Know exactly what production requires before you start.
What You Leave With
Cultivation Competency
Hands-on technique for oyster and white mushroom production — applicable immediately in a Kenyan growing environment.
Post-Harvest Skill
Quality grading, preservation, and packaging knowledge to produce to commercial buyer specification.
Export Readiness
Understanding of Kenya's edible fungi export channels, documentation requirements, and how to price for and approach buyers.
Pest and Disease Management
A systematic framework for protecting yield and maintaining production hygiene across a full growing cycle.
Joint Certificate
Issued by the Chamber Business Academy and the Hunan Provincial Edible Fungi Research Institute on completion of the five-day programme.
CBA Network Access
Entry into CBA's alumni community and the broader network of agricultural producers, buyers, and market facilitators connected through KNCCI.
